We proudly contributed to a critical human rights campaign addressing the severe limitations faced by tens of thousands of people with intellectual and psycho-social disabilities worldwide. Currently, these individuals are often denied fundamental rights – preventing them from working, marrying, voting, accessing healthcare, managing their own funds, or simply living freely. This systemic control is known as guardianship. Despite the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities advocating for its abolition, guardianship remains a pervasive paradigm globally.

This vital campaign originated in Bulgaria, spearheaded by the Bulgarian Center for Not-for-Profit Law (BCNL) and the Bulgarian Association for People with Intellectual Disabilities (BAPID). It builds upon the significant groundwork laid by “Next Step,” a pioneering initiative launched in 2012 by BCNL, BAPID, and the Global Initiative on Psychiatry – Sofia. “Next Step” systematically piloted support measures for individuals with intellectual disabilities or mental health problems, gathering crucial observations to inform proposed legal solutions. The program directly engaged over 150 people with disabilities and more than 1500 family members and close ones.

For this impactful campaign, we designed and distributed the limited print zine and postcards, serving as powerful visual tools to raise awareness and advocate for the abolition of guardianship, promoting self-determination and inclusion.
